GxP hiring

GxP Compliance Hiring: IT and Validation Staff for a Pharma or Device Company

Hiring for GxP compliance in IT is harder than it looks, because the skill that matters is hard to see on a CV. Companies need people who can show why a computerized system can be trusted and write that reasoning down so an inspector can follow it. The guidance behind this work has moved toward risk-based judgment, so a validation hire who only fills in templates is now the weaker choice, and two candidates with identical tool lists can be very different hires.

In validation, the reasoning behind the testing matters more than the volume of documents.

The terms

GxP, GAMP 5 and computer system validation in plain words

Three terms come up in almost every job description for this work.

  • GxP is shorthand for the "good practice" rules that apply to regulated work. The x stands for the area: manufacturing (GMP), laboratory work (GLP) or clinical trials (GCP). A GxP system is a computerized system used in one of those areas.
  • Computer system validation (CSV) is the work of showing, with documented evidence, that a system does what it is meant to do for its intended use. A person who does it might be called a validation engineer, a CSV specialist or a computerized systems QA specialist. Titles vary by company.
  • GAMP 5 is a guide from ISPE, the pharmaceutical engineering society, on how to do that work. The current edition, GAMP 5 Second Edition, came out in July 2022. ISPE describes its aim as computerized systems that are "fit for intended use" and compliant with regulations, and it stresses patient safety, product quality and data integrity. It is industry guidance, not a law.

What changed

Why validation hiring now rewards judgment

Older validation work often meant a stack of scripted tests and signed documents for every system, whatever the risk. The newer guidance asks for something different, and that changes who you want to hire.

  • GAMP 5 Second Edition highlights "critical thinking" by knowledgeable and experienced subject matter experts. It also says the specification and verification approach is not inherently linear, and that it supports iterative and Agile methods. It gives more weight to service providers, which includes cloud suppliers.
  • FDA's Computer Software Assurance (CSA) guidance describes a risk-based approach for software used in medical device production or the quality system. FDA issued it as final guidance on September 24, 2025 and reissued it on February 3, 2026 under the title "Computer Software Assurance for Production and Quality Management System Software." It says the effort should be "least-burdensome," where "the burden of validation is no more than necessary to address the risk." It is written for device makers and it is nonbinding. It does not remove the duty to validate. It changes how much evidence a low-risk function needs.
  • EU GMP Annex 11 covers computerised systems in EU manufacturing. The European Commission and PIC/S published a draft revision on July 7, 2025, with a consultation that ran to October 7, 2025. The draft stresses quality risk management through the life cycle, supplier and service provider oversight, and tighter controls on audit trails, electronic signatures and system security. A new draft Annex 22 covers AI models. In the sources we checked as of September 2026, the final texts had not been published, so check the current status before you rely on any detail.

For a hiring manager the catch is that both kinds of candidate can list the same tools and the same standards. The difference sits in the reasoning, and that is hard to read from a CV or one interview.

The roles

Which GxP IT role are you actually hiring?

"Validation" covers several jobs, and job titles do not map neatly onto them. This table is our description of common roles. Titles and boundaries differ between companies.

Common GxP IT and validation roles and what each one owns
RoleWhat the person doesUsually sits in
Validation engineer or CSV specialistPlans, runs and documents validation for a system, from requirements to releaseValidation, IT or QA
Computerized systems QA specialistReviews and approves validation work, deviations and changes for the quality unitQuality assurance
Data integrity specialistChecks that records are attributable, complete and protected, and reviews audit trailsQA or IT quality
Lab or manufacturing systems engineerConfigures and supports systems such as laboratory or manufacturing execution software and keeps them in a validated stateIT or site operations
IT quality and compliance leadOwns the procedures, supplier assessments and periodic reviews across systemsIT or quality

A company with one regulated system and a vendor to lean on needs a different person from a company running dozens of validated systems across sites. Getting that match wrong is one of the commonest reasons these hires do not last.

1.4

The difficulty

Why these hires are hard to judge

Listing "GAMP 5, CSV, LIMS" in a posting tells you little, because almost every applicant can claim them. What separates a strong hire from a weak one is judgment: deciding how much evidence a system needs, relying on a supplier's work without handing over responsibility, and keeping a system validated after go-live. The sources above point the same way. GAMP 5 stresses critical thinking, FDA's software assurance guidance stresses risk, and the Annex 11 draft stresses supplier oversight across the life cycle.

Data integrity is a good example. FDA's December 2018 guidance, "Data Integrity and Compliance With Drug CGMP: Questions and Answers," defines it as the completeness, consistency and accuracy of data, and says that data should be "attributable, legible, contemporaneously recorded, original or a true copy, and accurate," which spells ALCOA. Anyone can recite that list. Knowing what it means for a particular system, and spotting where it quietly fails, takes experience with the paperwork of real inspections.

That is why a poor validation hire often shows up late, in an audit finding or a repeat deviation, not in the first month. A quality team can spend weeks interviewing and still hire on tool names. Reading a candidate's reasoning, rather than their vocabulary, is the specialist screening work a recruiter who knows the field does before you meet anyone.

Geeqers

How Geeqers handles a GxP IT search

Geeqers is a US recruiting firm for pharma, biotech and medical-device companies, and IT roles are one of the areas on our employer page. This is how a search works with us, as we describe it on that page:

  • We screen every candidate ourselves. We search the market and speak to each person before you hear their name.
  • A shortlist within 7 business days of a complete brief.
  • No fee until your hire starts work, and nothing if nobody starts. The fee is agreed with you in writing before we begin.
  • A 90-day replacement. If your hire resigns, or you let them go for performance reasons, within 90 calendar days of their start date, we run the search again at no extra fee. The conditions are in the agreement you sign first.
  • Confidential searches on request, useful when you are replacing someone who does not know yet.

If you have a role to fill, send us a hiring brief. Tell us which systems the person will own and whether they are GxP regulated, and we will take it from there. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does GxP compliance mean for an IT hire?

It means the person will work on, or support, computerized systems used in regulated areas such as manufacturing, labs or clinical trials. Their work must be documented well enough to show the system does what it should and that its data can be trusted.

What is the difference between CSV and CSA?

Computer system validation is the long-standing practice of proving a system fits its intended use. Computer software assurance is FDA's name for a risk-based way of doing that for production and quality system software in medical devices, with less documentation for low-risk functions. FDA says the validation requirement still applies.

Is GAMP 5 a regulation?

No. It is a guide published by ISPE, widely used in the industry as a framework. Regulators publish their own rules and guidance, and companies often use GAMP 5 to meet them.

What does a validation engineer do?

A validation engineer plans and carries out the work that shows a system, process or piece of equipment is fit for its intended use, and keeps the evidence. In IT, that means computerized systems. We could not find a published government salary series for this title, so ask your own recruiter or HR team for current market ranges.

Do all IT hires at a pharma company need GxP experience?

No. Only roles that touch GxP systems need it. A candidate for a general IT job, such as office networks, does not. Ask your quality team which systems are in scope before you write the posting.

Can a GxP IT search be kept confidential?

Yes. Geeqers runs confidential searches on request, so your current team and competitors do not need to know you are hiring.
