Pharma Hiring Trends in IT: The Geeqers Tech Jobs Index, November 2026
SAP is the tech skill US pharma job ads mention most. On November 8, 2026, about 1,000 Indeed postings in the United States named "SAP" together with the word "pharmaceutical", well ahead of cybersecurity, machine learning and computer system validation at about 400 each. This is the first edition of our monthly index of pharma hiring trends in IT and tech, built from one simple count we will repeat every month: which skills employers write into their job ads.

1.1
The method
How we count, and what the numbers mean
Every number in this index comes from the same search on Indeed's US site, run on November 8, 2026. For each skill we searched for the skill in quotes plus the word pharmaceutical (for example, "AWS" pharmaceutical), with the location set to United States and no date filter.
Where Indeed shows a headline figure ("Now Hiring: 300"), we report that figure. Indeed rounds it, so read it as a size, not an exact total. Where Indeed showed no headline and all results fit on one page, we counted the listings ourselves. Where there was no headline but more than one page, we report the first-page count followed by a plus sign.
Keep these points in mind when you read the numbers:
- It counts mentions, not job titles. An ad for a quality systems manager that asks for SAP experience counts under SAP. One ad can count under several skills.
- It covers the whole pharma ecosystem. Drug makers, contract manufacturers, labs, suppliers, IT service firms and staffing agencies all post ads that mention pharmaceutical work.
- It uses one job board. Indeed is one of the biggest US job sites, but some employers post only on their own careers pages or on LinkedIn, so the true totals are higher.
- It is a snapshot. Postings open and close daily. As a check, we ran 14 of these searches two days earlier, on November 6, and Indeed returned the same headline figures for all 14.
The value of the index is in the comparison: between skills today, and between months as we repeat it.

SAP
Everywhere in the ads, rarely in the job title
SAP tops the index by a wide margin, yet searches for specific SAP modules return almost nothing. About 1,000 pharma ads mention SAP. Only about 25 mention S/4HANA, and modules such as MM, QM and PP return single digits.
The job titles on the first page explain the gap. They include SAP systems analysts for finance and supply chain, a CSV engineer with an SAP focus, a senior systems engineer for SAP security and GRC, and an associate director for SAP master data. Pharma rarely advertises for "an SAP consultant". It advertises for a quality, supply chain or validation person who must also know SAP.
That blend is exactly what makes these hires slow. Someone who knows SAP and has also delivered a validated system under FDA rules comes from a small pool, and that pool is under pressure: SAP ends mainstream maintenance for ECC on December 31, 2027. We cover the migration side in our guide to SAP staffing for pharma.
1.4
Cybersecurity
Security is now part of every infrastructure job
About 400 pharma ads mention cybersecurity, but searches for dedicated security titles return far less. "Security engineer" returned 15 postings and "SOC analyst" returned none.
The first-page titles show where the demand sits instead: an IT/OT systems engineer, a network and cybersecurity engineer, a DevSecOps engineer, an IT security engineer and an OT security platform engineer. Pharma companies increasingly expect the people who run networks, cloud platforms and manufacturing systems to secure them too.
For a hiring manager this changes the search. A pure security specialist may not fit, and a strong network engineer may not have the security depth the role quietly requires. Our guide to hiring cybersecurity talent in pharma explains why this profile is so hard to judge from a CV.
1.5
AI and automation
AI skills far outnumber classic automation tools
AI is the fastest way to see what has changed in pharma IT. Machine learning appears in about 400 ads, generative AI in about 200, and large language models and Copilot in about 100 each. Classic process automation tools barely register: RPA returned 7 postings and UiPath 2.
Copilot's showing matches what SAP users report. In research by Precisely and the Americas' SAP Users' Group, published in November 2026 and based on 169 SAP stakeholders, 60% said they use Microsoft Copilot alongside their SAP ERP processes, while only 3% reported fully automated, AI-driven processes. Most companies are using AI to help people work, not to replace whole processes yet.
SAP's own AI assistant, Joule, returned zero pharma postings, and SAP BTP, the platform its custom agents are built on, returned four. SAP spent 2026 launching AI agents, and at least one large drug maker is already piloting them. We look at what that means for pharma teams, and the skills involved, in our guide to SAP AI agents in pharma.

1.6
Validation
Computer system validation matches cybersecurity
Computer system validation (CSV) appears in about 400 pharma ads, the same level as cybersecurity and machine learning. That is easy to overlook, because CSV rarely makes headlines.
The reason is regulatory. Every system that touches GxP data, from SAP to a lab system to a cloud platform, has to be validated and kept in a validated state. Each new AI tool, migration or cloud move creates validation work. The first page of results included CSV engineers, CSV managers, a lead CSV engineer for clinical and R&D systems, and principal automation engineers focused on validation. Our guide to GxP compliance hiring for IT and validation staff covers what these people do.
1.7
Cloud
AWS leads, and cloud sits inside other roles
AWS appears in about 300 pharma ads and Azure in about 200. Google Cloud and Kubernetes trail at about 25 each. Yet "cloud engineer" and "cloud architect" returned only 6 postings each.
As with SAP and security, cloud is mostly asked for inside other roles. The first-page AWS results included a senior AWS and Azure engineer, an MLOps engineer, data engineers, an IT infrastructure engineer and a cloud middleware engineer. Pharma companies want cloud skills in the people who build data platforms and run infrastructure, which links cloud demand closely to the data and AI work above. Our guide to data engineering staffing for pharma covers one of the roles that carries it.
1.8
IT support
Microsoft 365 skills lead the service desk
On the support side, Microsoft 365 appears in about 100 pharma ads, more than help desk (about 50) or desktop support (8). IT support and ServiceNow come in at about 75 each, with Intune, systems administration and network engineering at about 25.
The titles show what modern pharma IT support looks like: identity engineers for cloud and Microsoft 365, IT support engineers, IT systems and cloud administrators, and a principal engineer for Microsoft 365 and Copilot platforms. Support roles now carry cloud identity and collaboration platform work, not only fixing laptops.
1.9
The hiring problem
Job boards count keywords, not combinations
Read the index as a whole and one pattern repeats in every category. Pharma rarely hires a single skill. It hires combinations: SAP plus validation, networking plus security, cloud plus data, AI plus GxP. A job board can tell you how many ads mention a skill. It cannot tell you who has delivered that skill inside a regulated company, and that is where most of the time in a pharma IT search goes.
That screening is the specialist work Geeqers does. We build shortlists of people who have done the combined work before, typically within 7 business days. Our fee is only payable after your hire starts, agreed in writing up front, and every placement comes with a 90-day free replacement. Searches can be run confidentially. If one of these skill combinations is on your hiring plan, send us a hiring brief and we will tell you what the market looks like for your role.

Next edition
How to use this index
We will publish a new edition on this page every month, using the same searches and the same method, so the numbers can be compared over time. November 8, 2026 is the baseline. From December, each edition will show which skills are rising or falling against earlier months.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which IT skills are pharma companies hiring for most in 2026?
In our November 8, 2026 count of US Indeed postings, SAP was mentioned most often (about 1,000 pharma ads), followed by cybersecurity, machine learning and computer system validation (about 400 each), AWS (about 300), and Azure and generative AI (about 200 each).
How is the Geeqers pharma IT hiring index calculated?
We search Indeed's US site for each skill in quotes plus the word pharmaceutical, with no date filter, and record Indeed's rounded headline figure. Where there is no headline figure, we count the listings ourselves. The index counts ads that mention a skill, so one ad can appear under several skills.
Why are there so few SAP module job ads in pharma?
Our data shows about 1,000 pharma ads mention SAP, but specific modules return single digits. The job titles suggest why: pharma usually advertises for quality, supply chain, validation or systems roles that require SAP, rather than for SAP module consultants by name.
Are pharma companies hiring for SAP Joule or AI agent skills yet?
Very few ads ask for them by name. In November 2026, "Joule" returned zero US pharma postings on Indeed and "SAP BTP" returned four. General AI skills are in much higher demand, with machine learning in about 400 ads and generative AI in about 200.
How often is the index updated?
Every month, on this page, using the same method. The first edition uses data collected on November 8, 2026.
