Data Engineering Staffing for Pharma: Hiring for AI-Ready Data
Data engineering staffing has become the quiet bottleneck in pharma's AI plans: most AI pilots in the industry stall because the data under them is messy, scattered or impossible to trace, and the people who fix that are data engineers. A pharma data engineer has to build modern cloud pipelines and also keep every record clean enough for an FDA inspector. This guide covers why AI projects stall on data, what the role involves in a regulated company, what data engineers earn in the US and why the hire is harder than it looks.

The problem
Why pharma AI projects stall on data
Pharma has no shortage of AI ideas. What it lacks is data that an AI system can safely use. Four recent surveys of industry leaders point the same way.
- ZS, 2026 research with 115 technology executives at biopharma and biotech companies: only 40% of AI pilots reach scaled deployment. The top reason given for failure (68%) is neglecting data quality and governance early.
- Veeva, a survey of 116 senior people in commercial biopharma: 96% said their data is not organized well enough to scale AI. Veeva added in February 2026 that 89% of these leaders cannot get even half of their AI projects past the pilot stage.
- Pistoia Alliance and Thoughtworks, poll of 170 pharma R&D leaders in 2026: 59% said fixing data quality and access would matter most for AI success in the coming year. Only 4% could show AI cutting R&D cost or time by more than 10%.
- Frost & Sullivan, polling 300 people across commercial, outcomes research and clinical teams, as reported by Collibra: on average, seven months of joining up and tidying data passes before a team gets its first usable insight.
Read those together and the message is plain. The algorithms are ready. The data foundations are not, and building them is the data engineer's job.

The role
What a pharmaceutical data engineer actually does
A data engineer builds and runs the systems that move data from where it is created to where it gets used. In a drug company that means pulling records out of lab systems (LIMS and electronic lab notebooks), clinical trial databases, manufacturing systems, ERP and the commercial CRM, then cleaning, linking and storing them on a platform the rest of the business can trust.
People often mix this role up with the data scientist. The simplest way to separate them: the data scientist asks questions of the data and builds models, while the data engineer makes sure the data exists, arrives on time and is correct. Without the second person, the first spends most of the week cleaning spreadsheets. We cover the other side of that partnership in our guide to hiring a data scientist in pharma, and the next step up the stack in hiring a machine learning engineer.
The tools are mostly the same ones any modern tech company uses. In an analysis of US data engineering job postings published in June 2026, AWS appeared in 43% of them, Azure in 41%, Snowflake in 32% and Databricks in 31%. SQL and Python were close to universal.
What changes in pharma is the setting. A live example: in October 2026, Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals advertised for a Senior Data Platform Engineer to own its Databricks environment, including Unity Catalog, Delta Lake and Terraform. Among the preferred skills, the posting asks for knowledge of pharma data and of the compliance duties attached to it. That one line is where most of the difficulty sits.

The rules
What regulators expect from pharma data
In most industries, a broken pipeline is an inconvenience. In pharma it can become an inspection finding. Data that supports a decision about a drug's safety, efficacy or quality has to be traceable from source to result, and the systems that hold it fall under 21 CFR Part 11, the FDA rule on electronic records and signatures. That means audit trails, controlled access and validated systems, all of which a data engineer has to design in from the start rather than bolt on later.
AI raises the bar again. In January 2026, the FDA and the European Medicines Agency published a joint set of ten principles on good AI practice in medicine development. The sixth covers data: where the data came from, every processing step and each analytical choice should be written down so that someone else can trace and check it, to GxP standards. Separately, the FDA's January 2025 draft guidance on AI in regulatory decision-making asks sponsors to show that the data behind a model is fit for use. That guidance was still marked as a draft on the FDA site when we checked on October 30, 2026, but reviewers already work from its framework.
So the pharma data engineer is not only building pipelines. They are building the evidence trail that lets the company defend an AI-supported decision in front of a regulator. Our guide to GxP compliance hiring for IT and validation staff explains how validation work fits around these systems.

What it costs
Data engineer salary in the US in 2026
Data engineers are now paid at or above data scientists. Robert Half's 2026 salary guide puts US starting pay for the two roles side by side:
| Role | Bottom of range | Midpoint | Top of range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data engineer | $127,000 | $156,250 | $180,750 |
| Data scientist | $121,750 | $153,750 | $182,500 |
| Machine learning engineer | $134,000 | $170,750 | $193,250 |
| DevOps engineer | $118,000 | $145,750 | $173,750 |
Real pharma postings sit in the same band. Arrowhead's senior data platform role above was advertised at $155,000 to $175,000 in Wisconsin and $175,000 to $190,000 in California. Pay climbs with seniority, location and stack: engineers who have run Databricks or Snowflake in production, or who have built pipelines for AI and LLM work, sit toward the top.
If you are comparing a permanent hire with a contractor, a useful anchor is the hourly equivalent. A $156,250 salary works out to roughly $75 an hour over a standard 2,080-hour year, before benefits and payroll costs. Contract rates usually run higher, because the rate has to cover benefits, gaps between projects and the supplier's margin.

The market
Why data engineers are hard to hire
Demand is strong and pharma is not the only buyer. Dice's September 2026 jobs report found US tech postings up 18% on a year earlier, with AI and machine learning postings up 101%. Robert Half lists the data engineer among the technology roles in highest demand this year.
Pharma's real competition is the consulting world. Get U Hired tracked 92,288 data engineer postings worldwide between July 22 and October 20, 2026, of which 30,933 were in the US. Consulting and outsourcing firms posted 34% of them, more than any other sector, and Deloitte alone posted 765. The firms selling AI projects to pharma are hiring from the same pool that pharma needs for its own team.
That leaves a hiring manager in a drug company with a narrow target: someone with the modern cloud stack, some exposure to regulated data and the patience to document everything. Most candidates have one or two of those, not all three.

The hard part
Why a strong CV can still be the wrong hire
Data engineering CVs look alike. Nearly every one lists Python, SQL, Spark and a cloud platform, so the keywords tell you very little about who can do the job in a regulated company.
The risk runs both ways. An engineer from a fast-moving tech company may build excellent pipelines but treat audit trails and change control as red tape, which is exactly what an inspector will find. An engineer who grew up inside pharma IT may know GxP well but has only worked on older on-premise tools, and will struggle when the platform is Databricks with infrastructure as code. Both look strong on paper. Each one fails in a different way six months in.
Telling them apart takes conversations with people who understand both the technology and the regulation, and it takes time most hiring managers do not have spare. That screening is the specialist part of a search, and it is the work we do before a name ever reaches you.

Geeqers
How Geeqers runs a data engineering search
Data engineers are one of the IT and data roles listed on our employer page, and we hire them onto your own team as permanent staff. Every search works the same way:
- No fee until your hire starts. There is no retainer, and the fee is agreed with you in writing before we begin.
- A shortlist in 7 business days. Each name comes with a short note on why they fit your role and what they have actually built.
- A 90-day free replacement if the person leaves or it does not work out.
- Confidential searches on request, useful when you are replacing someone or building a new data platform you would rather not announce.
If your AI plans are waiting on clean data, the first step is a short brief: the platform you run, the data domains involved (clinical, lab, manufacturing or commercial) and the level of GxP exposure you need. Send us your hiring brief and we will come back with names, not a sales call.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What does data engineering staffing mean?
It is the work of finding and hiring data engineers for a company. For pharma and biotech teams it also means checking that candidates can work with regulated data under GxP and FDA rules, not only that they know the cloud tools. Geeqers fills these roles as permanent hires on your own team.
How much does it cost to hire a data engineer in the US?
Robert Half's 2026 guide puts US starting pay for data engineers between $127,000 and $180,750, with a midpoint of $156,250. Senior pharma roles we have seen advertised in 2026 run from $155,000 to $190,000 depending on location. Add benefits and payroll costs on top.
What is a data engineer's hourly rate?
A salary of $156,250 equals about $75 an hour over a 2,080-hour year, before benefits. Contractors usually charge more than that equivalent, because their rate has to cover benefits, time between projects and the supplier's margin.
Data engineer vs data scientist: which should we hire first?
If your data is scattered across systems or hard to trust, hire the data engineer first. A data scientist without clean, connected data spends much of the week preparing it instead of building models. Surveys from ZS and Veeva in 2026 both found poor data foundations to be the main reason pharma AI projects fail to scale.
Does a pharma data engineer need GxP experience?
For pipelines that touch clinical, quality or manufacturing data, it helps a great deal, because those systems fall under 21 CFR Part 11 and need audit trails and validation. For purely commercial or internal analytics, strong engineering with a willingness to learn the rules can be enough. The level you need should be decided before the search starts.
Should we look for Databricks or Snowflake experience?
Look for experience on the platform you actually run. In US data engineering postings analysed in June 2026, Snowflake appeared in 32% and Databricks in 31%, so both pools are sizeable, but production experience on your platform shortens the time before a new hire is useful.
How quickly can Geeqers send a shortlist?
Within 7 business days of receiving your brief. You only pay once your new hire has started, and you are covered by a 90-day free replacement.
